Seal integrity test
At Qipack, we understand that packaging quality is important for protecting products, maintaining shelf life and preventing costly production failures. A reliable seal integrity test helps manufacturers verify whether packaging seals are strong, airtight and capable of protecting the product throughout transport, storage and end use. Our inspection technology enables manufacturers to perform continuous in-line seal integrity testing in real time, helping production teams immediately identify defects and optimise packaging quality control.

What is a seal integrity test?
A seal integrity test is used to determine whether a package seal forms a complete and reliable barrier against air, moisture, contaminants or product leakage. The purpose of the test is to verify that the seal maintains product protection during the entire product lifecycle.
Seal integrity testing is widely used for:
- flexible packaging
- food packaging
- pharmaceutical packaging
- medical device packaging
- pouch packaging
- thermoformed packaging
Traditional seal integrity testing methods include:
- vacuum decay testing
- bubble leak testing
- dye penetration testing
- peel strength testing
- burst testing
Advanced seal integrity testing with infrared inspection
Traditional testing methods are often performed offline and only on selected product samples. While effective for laboratory testing, these methods do not provide full real-time production control. Our infrared inspection technology provides a more advanced and preventive solution by continuously analysing thermal seal patterns directly after the sealing process. Infrared cameras detect residual heat within the seal area and compare each package against a known reference seal profile.
This enables the detection of:
- incomplete seals
- pressure inconsistencies
- laminate defects
- contamination within the seal
- weak polymer fusion
- packaging leaks
- wrinkles and folds
Unlike conventional vision systems, this technology inspects the internal thermal behaviour of the seal rather than only analysing the visible surface. As a result, manufacturers can identify seal integrity issues immediately during production and automatically reject defective products before they leave the production line.

Seal integrity testing guidelines
Consistent seal integrity testing requires accurate monitoring and stable sealing conditions throughout the packaging process. International testing standards commonly used within seal integrity testing include ASTM F88 for seal strength testing, ASTM F2096 for bubble leak testing, ASTM F2338 for non-destructive vacuum decay testing, ISO packaging integrity standards, and GMP and HACCP packaging quality guidelines. Our systems support these quality procedures through real-time thermal analysis and continuous in-line seal inspection.
Improve packaging confidence with intelligent seal integrity control
We believe seal integrity testing should go beyond simply identifying defective packaging. Our advanced technology gives manufacturers deeper insight into the behaviour of the sealing process itself, enabling production teams to detect trends, optimise machine performance and prevent defects before they occur.
